Commemorative Coins

Since 1993 the Czech Mint has been striking commemorative coins of precious metals for the Czech National Bank. Issuing these coins the CNB follows the tradition of formerly Czechoslovak commemorative coins.

The striking of silver commemorative coins of a nominal value of 200 CZK got underway in late 1993. Coins of this face-value have been produced continuously, whereas 4–5 coin sorts with new motifs are struck every year.

The mintage of gold commemorative coins was initiated in 1995. The gold coins started with nominal values of 1000 CZK, 2500 CZK, 5000 CZK and 10 000 CZK. This continued with a nominal value of 2000 CZK and now twice a year gold commemorative coins from the „Cultural Monuments of Technical Heritage“ series are struck with a nominal value of 2500 CZK.

The mint brand of the Czech Mint for currency is “b” with a crown and “ČM” for coins made of precious metals.

At the present, the Czech Mint produces golden and silver coins in the BU as well as the proof quality, which especially is appreciated by collectors.

The Czech Mint has already won a number of orders for supplies of currency and commemorative coins abroad, for example Moldova, the United Arab Emirates, Venezuela, Lebanon and Armenia.

After the previous success regarding winning the award for the mintage of the circulation bi-metal fifty-crown coin the Czech Mint obtained another significant award in 1999. Again, the Czech Mint was awarded a first place in the competition organised regularly in the USA by World Coin News magazine and Krause Publications – this time in the „Most Beautiful Gold Coin“ category for its 10 000 CZK coin from the „Charles IV.“ set featuring an image of the foundation of the Prague New Town.

The recurrent recognition of Czech coins in such a relatively short period of existence for the independent Czech currency testifies to its artistic and technical quality.
