Medals

Every year the Czech Mint strikes special medals to mark prominent historical anniversaries and contemporary social events.

The striking of medals actually began hand-in-hand with the minting of coins at the Czech Mint. The Czech Mint publishes an issue plan every year in which the medals to be struck for important historical anniversaries or current social events are presented. This issue plan is always sent out to all customers of the Czech Mint at the turn of November and December.

The Czech Mint launched so-called high-mass gold investment coins in 2005. The first in 2005 was a 1 kg gold medal to mark the first anniversary of the accession of the Czech Republic to the European Union. 50 of these medals were made, with the price of one coming in at 500 000 CZK. The medals were all snapped up right away. Then in 2006 medals of 100 ducats (348.5 g) and 40 ducats (139.5 g) in weight were issued for the first time. The year 2007 saw the issue of 100-ducat and 40-ducat medals and again the 1 kg medals. Again the entire issue of these investment medals was taken very quickly.

The ducat range is very popular among collectors and investors alike. It consists of 4 medals whose motifs form a collective whole. The ducat range was inspired by family at the beginning. Then in 2005 the range was first struck with images of Czech mythology (Old Father Czech, Libuše, Přemysl the ploughman, St. Wenceslas) and will be issued with images of artistic genres in Bohemia and Moravia (the art of Great Moravia, Gothic, Baroque and Art Nouveau) from 2008 onwards

In addition to striking pieces from the issue plan, the Czech Mint also strikes commemorative medals from precious metals for companies and individuals that want to remember a prominent anniversary; for example the anniversary of the company’s foundation, the launch of a new product on the market, a reward for prominent customers or successful employees, etc. The Czech Mint has struck pieces for prominent companies such as Škoda Auto, Česká spořitelna, Komerční banka, Kooperativa pojišťovna and dozens of others.
